Advocating for improved personal injury laws

In the lead up to the March 2023 NSW election, Aeran’s Jane Campbell, in her role as NSW ALA Committee member, was able to be part of a delegation to meet with then NSW Attorney-General the Hon Mark Speakman, the Shadow Attorney-General (now Attorney-General) Mr Michael Daley and Legislative member of the Greens Party, Ms Abigail Boyd.

At this meetings we were able to discuss laws of concern, including those impacting NSW personal injury clients.

Jane spoke to the issue of the statutory discount rate, explaining why it is too high and must be reduced. She explained the impact that inflation is having on the injured and their inability to have their compensation last their lifetime.

Jane also spoke to our concerns about funding of the NSW Trustee & Guardian. She drew attention to the fee increases last year that had been predicted by the ALA and had resulted in large numbers of plaintiffs being undercompensated for funds management. We emphasised the importance of proper funding for the NSWTAG given their vital role for some of the State’s most vulnerable people.

We feel we were given a fair hearing but action is now needed!
